What's the difference between Chromium OS and Google Chrome OS?
Google Chrome OS is to Chromium OS what Google Chrome browser is to Chromium.
- Chromium OS is the open source project, used primarily by developers, with code that is available for anyone to checkout, modify, and build.
- Google Chrome OS is the Google product that OEMs ship on Chromebooks for general consumer use.
Some specific differences:
- The two projects fundamentally share the same code base, but Google Chrome OS has some additional firmware features, including verified boot and easy recovery, which require corresponding hardware changes and thus also don't work out of the box in Chromium OS builds.
- Google Chrome OS runs on specially optimized hardware in order to get enhanced performance and security.
- Chromium OS does not auto-update by default (so that changes you may have made to the code are not blown away), whereas Google Chrome OS seamlessly auto-updates so that users have the latest and greatest features and fixes.
- Google Chrome OS is supported by Google and its partners; Chromium OS is supported by the open source community.
- Google Chrome OS includes some binary packages which are not allowed to be included in the Chromium OS project. A non-exhaustive list:
- Adobe Flash
- Widevine CDM plugin (to support HTML5 EME)
- 3G Cellular support (but work is on going to address this)
- DisplayLink Manager for video over USB (some systems)
- Android (ARC++) container for running Android apps
- Some components are available in both, but as closed source binary-only blobs. A non-exhaustive list:
- Graphics Libraries (e.g. OpenGL) on ARM platforms
- Google Chrome ships with its own set of API keys while Chromium does not include any
- Users are expected to set up their own
- Google Chrome OS has a green/yellow/red logo while Chromium OS has a blue/bluer/bluest logo.
Where can I download Google Chrome OS?
Google Chrome OS is not a conventional operating system that you can download or buy on a disc and install. As a consumer, the way you will get Google Chrome OS is by buying a Chromebook that has Google Chrome OS installed by the OEM. Google Chrome OS is being developed to run on new machines that are specially optimized for increased security and performance. Where can I download Chromium OS?

Creating Bootable USB Drive.
In order to install Chrome OS on your PC, you must get a 'Chrome OS' image file from the internet. There are a few providers that offering Customized and compiled Chrome OS (image) that you can flash into USB drive and simply boot from it.
Step 1. Grab a compiled chrome os: we tested this compiled Chrome OS image (64-bit) you've to download an image according to your computer architecture. You can use an Internet download manager to download it, once downloaded extract the zip file using 7Zip or WinRar and save it to any place you can easily find it later.
Step 2. Download a media creation tool:, we've used Win32 Image Writer, choose the 'Image file' that you earlier downloaded and click on 'Write' button and wait for a couple of minutes. Booting into Chrome OS on PC.
- Turn off your computer (disable fast startup to access hard drive access when using Chrome OS).
- Start your computer while USB drive plugged in and press a boot device selection button, on my HP laptop I can access boot devices selection menu by pressing F9 key. You must select 'External USB drive' from the boot device menu.
- If things go right, you'll find a couple of menu items to choose from, Select 'Image 1' and press enter key. Local Image A. B can be used as 2 instances of Chrome OS. The Verified images ensure some capabilities and features. I'm quite unsure about the alternate USB boot option, guess if the options fail to load the Chrome OS that's the option you can try (I did check, and it booted me to the saved session of Image A).
- Within Few minutes, the Chrome OS will load and ask to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Remember you can't get past without an Internet connection, Chrome OS is likely unusable without an active Internet connection. But fortunately, after setting it for the first time, You can use some offline application without the need for active Internet connection.
- You need to use your Google account password when you boot again to it. Alternatively, you can always add other users.
Chrome OS First Impressions.
This is a brief review of the Chrome OS installed on my HP laptop with 4GB RAM and Intel i3 Processor.
After the quick essential setup, the Chrome OS will launch, Clicking on the round-start-icon let you type anything to search or open apps.
You see the transparent taskbar with a bunch of icons on the right side, clicking on them you can switch/toggle WiFi networks and control volume. You Also find the sleep and turn off button there, and you need to enable the Accessibility options to show here manually. Sadly, I couldn't find an option to change Screen brightness (Also, Ctrl+Alt+Brightness-up/down Didn't work for me, it opened the Developer terminal).
Update: To change brightness the F6 and F7 key worked for me.

Of course, it is mostly about Chrome Browser (Chromium Browser) so that it supports online apps and extensions available on the Chrome Web Store.
